Today is Administrative Professionals day. It's a day to recognize the hard work that admins do every day. It seems a bit silly that it's actually a day but I'll take it. It's nice to get flowers (even if I got them for myself) So it got me thinking about great assistants in the world of movies and TV. Who is an icon for secretaries or assistants, someone who I can look up to, someone who I can emulate?
Well I'm not sure if I can do that with these people but it's sure fun to put a list together.
1. Doralee, 9 to 5.
Every secretary who's ever been hit on by a sexist, tyrannical boss, Doralee (Dolly Parton)'s got your karmic payback right here. First she enjoys a hilarious, rodeo-themed fantasy that involves lassoing the boss, Mr. Hart (Dabney Coleman), and making him her boytoy. Then, with the help of fabulous coworkers Judy and Violet (Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin), she makes the abduction part of the fantasy come true, keeping Hart trussed up at home while the three career gals institute workplace reforms. Icing on the cake: Dolly Parton gets to compose and sing the movie's hit theme song. What a way to make a livin'.
2. Grace, Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Screw Ferris. Grace (Edie McClurg) is the coolest character in this movie. I like to think she sat in traffic, chain-smoking for an hour every morning, just to get to her desk on time. And when she finally did, who did she have to deal with? Ed freakin' Rooney, an ass of the highest order. . She even took an interest in the students, as evidenced by her ability to rattle off the school's various cliques, from the ''sportos'' to the ''sluts'' and the ''dweebies.'' And yet, with that same cheerful smile on her face, she also got some good zings on Rooney, like when she casually mentions that Ferris ''makes you look like an ass, is what he does, Ed.''
3. Anges DiPesto, Moonlighting
At the Blue Moon detective agency
She answered the phone
When Dave and Maddie were fighting
You could hear her moan
She had a big crush
On Herbert Viola
And we wouldn't trade a minute of her weirdness
Not one iota
Moonlighting was funny
We've got Agnes DiPesto to thank
She liked speaking in rhymes
And was refreshingly frank
She's an iconic secretary
Played by Allyce Beasley
And you can try to forget her
But it won't be easy
I’ll stop rhyming now I mean it
Anybody want a peanut?
4. Lloyd, Entourage
As if being called''Gaysian'' wasn't hard enough, Lloyd (Rex Lee) also has the misfortune of playing assistant to the touchy Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven), who enjoys calling him things like ''Michelle Kwan in drag.'' Lloyd is the only character whose loyalty brings out a glimpse of his boss's human side. Riding low in his ''prop car from The Fast and the Furious,'' the thick-skinned Lloyd looks poised to have the last laugh.
So be nice to all the adminstrative professionals out there. They are the one's actually running the place.
